Talk About Yourself!
Tell us a bit about yourself
BE CRISP, STRUCTURED, AND PRECISE. REMEMBER TO STOP. AND TO SMILE.
I use the mnemonic C.R.I.M.E. as an aide memoire
GOOD IDEAS
Follow a structured approach. Don’t be shy, but do consider going CAMP.
The course I originally attended years ago taught me the ready reckoner of C-linical, A-cademic, M-anagement/ Governance / Teaching and P-ersonal.
My preferred mnemonic is C R I M E
Clinical : Focus on (usually your most recent professional) achievements or capabilities that demonstrate you are fit to be appointed.
Research : or Teaching, for that matter. The ‘academic’ component of your answer. How much you emphasise it depends on the post.
Innovation : This quality is in much demand in cash-strapped times. Innovate yourself something of merit to state here.
Management, Governance roles, Implementation of Change….
Extracurricular: Offer specifics that substantiate you are sporty or musical or literary, etc, rather than simply claiming to be erudite, physically fit, well-rounded.
NOT-SO-GOOD IDEAS
Look stunned! You did NOT expect this question! / Start by telling them where you went to Kindergarden / Switch rapidly between your school highlights, recent patient care, dental problems, university hangovers and back to the stress of the Royal College Exam. This proves you can think on your feet. N O T. / Just say, “I usually do CRIME, but most people go CAMP.” / “Have you not bothered to read my CV? It is ALL in there!!” / Stare down the questioner / Pretend not to be interested.
